History of Life on Earth

A lot can happen to the Earth’s plants and animals during 4 billion years of evolution. Some of these changes occurred in response to the shifting continental plates. Others occurred because of changing climates, including both “snowball” and thermal maximum phases. We will consider the nature of geologic time but will focus on the complex history of life on Earth including life’s origins, its many variations through time (some quite bizarre), and its near disappearance in several mass extinctions.
