Basic Home Repair
 

Discover the basic tools and techniques you need to take care of your house. Learn how to repair a toilet, replace a faucet, install a sink, a garbage disposal, and other minor plumbing jobs, replace or install a simple electrical switch, a three-way switch, a ceiling fan, simple electrical troubleshooting, drywall repair, and more. In the first three or four classes we will cover these skills and then go on to specific interests students might have such as laying tile, grouting, carpentry and more.

Intermediate Birding
 

Build on basic birding skills by traveling to various Davidson County birding hotspots, selected to highlight diverse habitats. Students will learn how to use a spotting scope, determine locations based on season/weather, utilize data and differentiate similar species. Students will come away with a great beginning "life list" of birds, as well as knowing some of the best local places to go birding on their own.

Prerequisites: Completion of NCE's Beginning Birding or a working understanding of bird identification, using field guides, eBird, and binocular usage.

Knife Skills

Pioneer Cast Iron Cooking
 
Students will learn how pioneers cooked breads, full meals, and desserts on the hearth. Use of cast iron cookware, utensils and cooking techniques will be demonstrated. Over the course of three weeks, students will cook cornbread, cakes, and main dishes outside in the school courtyard. Students are required to bring a folding camp chair to the outdoor classroom.

Safe Sleep and Care for Infants
 

Pregnancy can be an exciting time, but many moms-to-be are nervous too. Receive information on creating a safe sleep environment, the effects of smoke exposure, testing and risk reduction for the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy, and the benefits of breastfeeding. Moms-to-be will get tips for talking to other caretakers regarding your baby's needs. Light refreshments will be provided. All moms will walk away with a pack ‘n play, fitted sheet, sleeps sack, and diaper bag full of goodies.

If you enroll in the smoking cessation program you, and others living in your home, are may be eligible for a $25 per month diaper voucher.  Only pregnant moms should register for the class, but each mom should bring one support person (dad, grandma/pa, auntie/uncle). Please register both people.
