Beginning Machine Knitting

Create a Rug from Old T-Shirts
 
In the past, all clothing was upcycled into something else useful such as a rag rug. You'll learn how to cut t-shirts into strips of continuous yarn which will be use to crochet an oval rug. Once you can make a rug out of old t-shirts, you can make rugs out of any fabric! Beginners welcome. Students will need to provide their own t-shirts and fabric scissors and purchase crochet hooks.

Crochet Basics
 

Crochet, the act of pulling of yarn through other loops of yarn, can be used to make articles of clothing, housewares and works of art. Handmade Leather Bags
 

There's nothing more classic or stylish than a simple leather bag. Students will be introduced to leather craft through the creation of a bag. Instruction includes how to stitch the leather, cut straps, edge and burnish, and set rivets. Students will leave class with a completed bag, all materials provided.

Mixed Media Travel Journals
 
 Traveling can make us see ourselves differently and can connect us with ourselves. Keeping a journal can be therapeutic and is a fun way to reflect on memories. We will produce a Mixed Media Travel Journal for places we have been and have yet to go. Using keepsakes from old trips, we will create, in scrapbook form, small mixed media pieces of art. We will also engage in writing exercises based on our greatest traveling memories. Additionally, students will make mixed media postcards to encourage future travel.

Secrets of Shibori: Stitches & Knots
 

Shibori is a Japanese based technique of knotting, stitching, tying, folding, and wrapping to create patterns and images in fabric. Indigo dye works harmoniously with shibori to show off these designs. Students will have the opportunity to create samples of various stitches and knots in cotton fabric and design a silk scarf based on these samples. Students will also learn how to build and maintain an indigo vat and to use it for dyeing their fabrics.
